Washington: North Korean weapons are a threat to the United States

A senior US Department of Defense official claimed that North Korea was producing and stockpiling weapons of mass destruction, and that these weapons and military capabilities posed a serious threat to the United States and its allies.

Jennifer Walsh, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Global Security and Homeland Security, has accused North Korea of producing and stockpiling weapons of mass destruction.

In a report to the US House Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations, Walsh claimed that North Korea was building and stockpiling weapons of mass destruction, including chemical, biological and nuclear weapons.

According to Yonhap News Agency stating that “North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may order the use of these weapons during the war on the Korean Peninsula,” he said: “North Korea’s continued pursuit of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons threatens international stability and undermines the non-proliferation regime.”

Acknowledging that Pyongyang’s military capabilities pose a serious threat to Washington and its allies, the US official claimed: “Given the danger of Kim Jong-un’s willingness to use weapons of mass destruction during the conflict on the Korean Peninsula, joint forces [US and South Korea] must be prepared to operate in areas contaminated with SHMR.”

Accusing other countries, including Russia and China, of developing chemical and biological weapons, Walsh said Washington and Seoul are working together to counter any threat from North Korea.

The allegations came as a North Korean government official on Sunday morning criticized US President Joe Biden’s recent remarks, saying the positions showed Washington’s continued hostility to Pyongyang, which would ultimately be to their detriment.

Biden claimed in his first speech to Congress on Thursday morning: “As for the Iran-North Korea nuclear program, which poses a serious threat to US security and world security, we are working closely with our allies to address the threats posed by the two countries through strict diplomacy and deterrence.”
