United Nations: More than 56 million people are hungry in Latin America

Pak Sahafat – The “Economic Commission of Latin America and the Caribbean” (SEPAL), the “Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations” (FAO) and the “World Food Program” announced that the number of people suffering from the problem of hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean is 56 It has reached one million and 500 thousand people.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report on Wednesday, quoting from the website of the Telesur TV channel, the three organizations presented a joint report in Santiago, Chile, entitled “Towards food security and sustainable nutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean in response to the global food crisis”, which confirms the number of hungry people in the region from 2019 to 2021, increased by 13 million and 200 thousand people and reached 56 million and 500 thousand people.

According to this report, the increase in the price of basic products caused by the global crisis is one of the main reasons for this issue.

United Nations institutions stated that last year (2021), the increase of 62 million and 500 thousand people suffering from food insecurity in the world brought the total number of people involved in the problem of hunger to 267 million and 700 thousand people, which is 40 percentage of the population of Latin America.

“Mario Lubetkin”, regional representative of FAO, noted: countries’ high dependence on fertilizer imports and changes in food prices have a negative and unavoidable impact on livelihoods and access to a healthy diet, especially for the rural population.

“Lola Castro”, the regional head of the World Food Program, also emphasized that in a scenario where “multidimensional poverty is increasingly linked to food and nutrition insecurity, social support systems, including school meals, play an essential role in reducing people’s vulnerability.

The United Nations Children’s Fund recently warned that 16.5 million children and adolescents in Latin America and the Caribbean will need humanitarian assistance in 2023, and guaranteeing this support requires the collection of $723 million.
