UN assistance of $ 6 million to the Taliban

Despite the sanctions, the United Nations is set to provide $ 6 million in funding to the Taliban-controlled Afghan Interior Ministry, according to informed sources.

According to the Pak Sahafat news agency, quoted by Reuters, informed sources say the United Nations plans to provide $ 6 million in funding to the Taliban. Evidence suggests that the budget is to be used to help Taliban forces protect UN facilities in Afghanistan next year.

The UN explanation for the payment of this budget states: Taliban forces are facing continued insecurity in the country and the severe shortage of funds due to the cessation of international financial aid following the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan.

“The deputy spokesman for the United Nations, Farhan Haq, said in an email: As an employer, the United Nations has a responsibility to support its staff in countries where insecurity is rampant.

Some analysts say the funding could be a clear violation of US sanctions against Taliban forces in Afghanistan. Sirajuddin Haqqani, a Taliban leader and current Afghan interior minister, is among those subject to US sanctions.

Farhan Haqq emphasized: The allocation of this budget is currently under consideration, but if it is paid, it will comply with all international sanctions laws.

However, he did not answer the question whether this budget violates US sanctions.
