Twitter blocked 3,500 user accounts

The Twitter social network blocked the accounts of 3,500 users in six countries, including China and Russia, who were involved in government propaganda on Thursday night.

According to the Pak Sahafat news agency: Twitter announced in a statement: The vast majority of these accounts were part of a network that worked on how the Chinese Communist Party treated the Uighur population in Xinjiang.

Twitter also blocked 112 accounts linked to a company called Changyu Culture affiliated with the Xinjiang Regional Government.

Twitter is blocking accounts as Facebook announced yesterday that it had closed more than 500 accounts that were part of a Chinese-linked hacking campaign linked to Covid-19.

Twitter also blocked 16 accounts linked to the Internet research agency of a Russian company that critics call a troll farm.

Twitter also said in a statement that it had removed a network of 50 accounts that attacked the Libyan civilian government and its backers, while also providing significant support for Russia’s geopolitical position in Libya and Syria.

The accounts of a number of advertising companies in Mexico and Venezuela have also been blocked.

The blocking of accounts comes as Twitter, like other social media giants, has been criticized for failing to crack down on misinformation on its platform, as well as racist and sexist posts, among other forms of hate speech.
