Turki al-Faisal: The Taliban must be pressured before they can be recognized

The former head of the Saudi intelligence service said that in order for the Taliban to fulfill its international obligations, they must first be pressured and then recognized.

According to the Pak Sahafat news agency, in his latest statement on Afghanistan, former Saudi intelligence chief Turki al-Faisal said the international community should not turn away from Afghanistan and that the Taliban’s international commitments must first be pressured and then recognized.

He added that the international community should emphasize the need for the Taliban to establish an inclusive government and urge them to commit to human rights, women’s rights and the non-use of Afghan territory by terrorists.

According to the president, al-Faisal said that Saudi Arabia also wants to play its role in accepting the Taliban’s international obligations.

He also noted: Saudi Arabia cannot play the role of the United States in Afghanistan because it does not have the capacity to provide US assistance to Afghanistan.

Recently, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan al-Saud told an Indian media outlet about the developments in Afghanistan that the return and revival of al-Qaeda and ISIS in Afghanistan was a “real concern.”

Faisal added that transnational terrorism is a concern, but that the Taliban have now pledged not to use Afghan territory for terrorism.

Emphasizing that Saudi Arabia has nothing to do with the Taliban government, he stated that Riyadh would “wait and watch (developments in Afghanistan)” before recognizing them.
