To stop the aggression .. Lebanon calls for international pressure on Israel

On Friday, Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab called on the United Nations to put pressure on Israel to stop violating its sovereignty.

This is stated in a statement by the Lebanese government, at the same time as escalating military tensions on the border with Israel.

Diab called on the United Nations to put pressure on Israel to comply with Resolution 1701 and to prevent violations of Lebanese sovereignty.

The Security Council adopted Resolution 1701 in August 2006, calling for an end to all hostilities between Lebanon and Israel following clashes between the two sides in July of that year.

“The need to prevent a repeated Israeli violation of Lebanese sovereignty, which culminated on Thursday when enemy planes attacked Lebanese territory,” Diab stressed.

For his part, former Prime Minister Saad Hariri said in a statement that “the situation on the border with the Israeli enemy is very dangerous and an unprecedented threat to Resolution 1701.”

He added: “Using the south as a platform for regional conflicts with unaccounted for consequences is a step towards the unknown that puts all of Lebanon at risk of other people’s wars in their homeland.”

He stressed that Lebanon “is not part of the Iran-Israel conflict in the Oman Sea (…) The Lebanese government, with its military and security forces, is responsible for protecting citizens and providing elements of sovereignty.”

And early Friday, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for firing rockets into northern Israel in a statement.

He said: “Open ground near Israeli-occupied areas in the Shebaa Farms was bombarded with dozens of 122mm rockets in response to Israeli airstrikes on open land in the Al-Jarmaq and Al-Shuwakar areas on Thursday night.”

A spokesman for the Israeli army said in a statement: “Hezbollah fired 19 missiles from the northern Shebaa region, three of which landed inside Lebanon, six in the open without any casualties, and 10 more bullets were intercepted.”
