“Thomas West” replaced Khalilzad as US Special Representative for Afghanistan

Zalmai Khalilzad resigned from the US Special Representative for Afghanistan and was replaced by his deputy after the US’s scandalous withdrawal from Afghanistan, which sparked a wave of domestic and international criticism of the Biden government.

According to the regional office of Pak Sahafat news agency Zalmai Khalilzad, the US special envoy for Afghanistan and the architect of the US-Taliban agreement, resigned after sending his resignation letter to US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

Reacting to Khalilzad’s resignation in a tweet, Blinken praised him for “decades of service to the American people” and announced that Khalilzad’s deputy, Thomas West, had been appointed as the new US Special Representative for Afghanistan.

In the letter, Khalilzad told Blinken that now that the United States is entering a new phase in its policy in Afghanistan, now is a good time to step down.
