The United Nations has warned of the danger of a “complete collapse” of Afghanistan

The United Nations has warned that the country could be in “complete collapse” if the international community does not find a way to keep funding into Afghanistan.

According to the International Pak Sahafat news agency, according to Al Jazeera:  Nearly $ 10 billion in assets of the Central Bank of Afghanistan have been frozen with foreign banks to be used as leverage against the new Taliban government.

But the United Nations warns that the country could be in “complete collapse” if the international community does not find a way to keep money flowing into Afghanistan.

Deborah Lions, the UN special envoy for Afghanistan, told the Security Council on Thursday that “In order to ‘prevent the complete destruction of the economic and social order’ in Afghanistan, it is necessary to find a way to bring financial resources into Afghanistan,” she said. Afghanistan is facing a storm of crises, including a sharp fall in currency prices, a sharp rise in food and fuel prices, and a lack of liquidity in private banks.

She also said that the Afghan authorities do not have the necessary funds to pay salaries.

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund has blocked the Taliban from accessing about $ 440 million in new emergency reserves.

Addressing the 15 members of the Security Council, Lyons said that security measures could be taken to ensure that financial resources could not be misused to do things in a different way than before, especially in the areas of human rights, gender issues and the perspective of the fight against terrorism.

Foreign donors to UN-sponsored aid to Afghanistan provide more than 75 percent of Afghanistan’s general budget, which has been weakened by the withdrawal of US troops after 20 years of occupation.

The administration of US President Joe Biden has said it welcomes humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, but says any direct economic route, including unblocking the central bank’s assets, to Taliban actions, including allowing people to leave the country safely. Meanwhile, the first international commercial aircraft belonging to Qatar Airways with more than 100 passengers left Kabul International Airport for Doha yesterday (Thursday).

“Jeffrey Dulantis,” a senior US diplomat, told the UN Security Council: “The Taliban are seeking international legitimacy and support. Our message is simple: any support and legitimacy must be gained.”
