The role of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi in relations with Israel

Haaretz revealed in a report that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was responsible for relations with Israel during his father’s rule.

According to the Hebrew-language newspaper, Saif al-Islam was meeting with the Israelis while portraying himself as one of the most outspoken supporters of the Palestinian cause.

According to Haaretz, despite the lack of formal relations between the two sides, Israel and the Gaddafi government had constant contacts on diplomatic and humanitarian issues.

The report added: Saif al-Islam made the calls through a Libyan Jewish businessman.

Israel, on the other hand, attached great importance to Libya because of its strategic position in the Mediterranean Sea and its proximity to Egypt.

In addition, a significant Jewish minority lived in Israel and could exert influence over Libyan Jews who immigrated to Italy.

Prior to the overthrow, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi had promised to establish relations with Israel if it acted to improve relations with the United States and the West.

It is worth mentioning that Imam Musa Sadr disappeared after his trip to Libya and Dr. Fathi Shaqaqi was assassinated by Mossad on his way back from Libya.
