The plot to assassinate an Iraqi Air Force commander failed

ISIL operatives planted an explosive device in front of the home of an Iraqi Army Air Force commander, which failed.

An Iraqi security source said the assassination of an Iraqi Air Force commander in Baghdad had failed.

The source, who is a Baghdad police officer, told Anatolia News Agency: “Several unidentified individuals, possibly ISIS terrorist elements, planted an explosive device in front of the house of Samir al-Maliki, a commander in the Iraqi Air Force.”

He stressed that the bombing took place in the “Al-Arabi” neighborhood in the Al-Mansour area in western Baghdad, and that the terrorists also targeted al-Maliki.

The source noted that the Iraqi army’s explosives experts were able to defuse the package without any casualties or financial loss.

The Iraqi Air Force also announced on its Facebook page that the explosive package had been defused by publishing an immediate news item, but did not provide further details.

Iraqi forces are pursuing terrorist elements of ISIL. Recently, two ISIL suicide bombers blew themselves up in al-Tayran Square in the heart of Baghdad, killing and injuring more than 100 Iraqi citizens.

In recent months, attacks by ISIL-affiliated elements have increased in areas such as Kirkuk, Salah al-Din and Diyala.

Although Iraq declared victory over ISIS in 2017 and managed to retake its territory, the group’s elements are still operating sporadically in various parts of the country.
