The nightmare of classified information management in Washington

Pak Sahafat – After last week’s raid by the US Federal Police on Trump’s residence and the discovery of top-secret documents and their storage in inappropriate conditions in this place, intelligence managers assessed this situation as a nightmare for the management of highly classified information.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report, quoted by Reuters news agency, Some security experts say that the discovery and seizure of confidential and top-secret documents of the US government from Donald Trump’s residence in “Maralago” has created many national security concerns.

The former US president’s residence is currently under investigation by the Federal Police (FBI) for possible violations of the law and espionage or misuse of US defense information.

This is not the first time Trump has been accused of breaking the law due to leaking classified information. During his presidency, he sometimes shared information without considering its sensitivity. U.S. officials said at the time that early in his presidency, Trump was giving the Russian foreign minister highly classified information about planned operations against ISIS.

But now, the existence of confidential documents in a summer residence where his parties were held, has marked a different situation.

“Mary McCord,” a former official of the US Department of Justice, said that the search warrant for “Maralago” raises concerns about national security.

He added: Keeping highly confidential documents in inappropriate warehouses, especially in a place like Maralago, poses a serious threat to national security due to the presence of foreign guests who may be related to governments and foreign agents.

But Trump, in response to the discovery of highly classified documents from his residence in Palm Beach, Florida, said that these documents were all declassified and kept in a safe place.

But McCord, in response to Trump’s claim, emphasized that this is not an acceptable reason for removing the documents and transferring them to a private residence, and that after leaving the White House, Trump no longer had the power to declassify the information.

The raid of the American Federal Police last Monday on Trump’s summer residence and the discovery of dozens of boxes containing confidential and top-secret documents, including information related to the US defense and the President of France, create an alarming situation for intelligence experts.

A former American intelligence officer said in this regard: This is a nightmare situation for the careful management of highly classified information. This is a nightmare.

On the other hand, although the Ministry of Justice did not provide details about how and where the documents and photos are stored, it is said that the vulnerability of the said documents is well documented.

The “Hill” news website also reported in a report about the proposal of senior Democrats to review the assessment of damages to the documents discovered from Maralago.

This news site wrote: “Carolyn Maloney”, the chairman of the House of Representatives Oversight Committee, and “Adam Schiff”, the chairman of the House of Representatives’ Intelligence Committee, in a letter to the director of the National Intelligence Service, requested him to discover the damages caused to confidential and top-secret documents.

However, on the other hand, representatives of the Republican Party have asked the Department of Justice to be more transparent about the search of Trump’s residence, and some have gone even further and called it political harassment against Trump.

“Margery Taylor Green”, a Republican member of the House of Representatives, following the statement of the Attorney General of the United States regarding the approval of her person to investigate Maralago, pointed to the legal provision based on which it is possible to impeach this official of the Department of Justice of the United States.
