Ted Cruz: Leaving the Bagram base was catastrophic

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz criticized the Biden administration’s decision to evacuate Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan in July in a statement issued after dozens of people were killed in a terrorist attack near Kabul airport on Thursday.

According to the Pak Sahafat: Bagram Air Base, once the largest US military base in the country and controlled by the Taliban, is located about 40 miles from Kabul. The facility was abandoned by the United States on the eve of the deadline for withdrawing troops from Afghanistan.

Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz tweeted from Fox News commentator Brit Hume, who issued a statement in August about Gen. Mark Millie, the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In the statement, Milli spoke of the need to leave Bagram to secure the US embassy in Kabul.

Millie said at the time: The task given to us at that time was to protect the embassy in order to continue the work of the embassy staff in providing consular services and such activities. If we are to maintain the mission of both Bagram and the embassy, it will require a significant number of troops, and the number of troops will either remain the same or exceed it, so we must leave one of them and It was decided in this case.

Ted Cruz, a fierce critic of the Biden administration’s strategy for Afghanistan, tweeted that the US leaving Bagram was “catastrophic.”

He added: Millie’s remarks are exactly what the Pentagon said at today’s meeting. They left Bagram because they were ordered to reduce the level of troops below the level required to maintain security at the Bagram and the embassy at the same time. This political decision to close Bagram came out of the water before the catastrophic exit.

In addition to Cruz, a number of other Republican lawmakers, including Lindsay Graham and Ben Sass from Nebraska, attacked the decision to leave Bagram. Graham and Sass have asked Joe Biden to reclaim the facility.
