US officials said that Jeffrey Smith, a police officer present during a January 17 attack by Donald Trump supporters on Congress, committed suicide.
Three weeks after Donald Trump’s supporters fatally attacked a US congressional hearing to confirm Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election, the second police officer present during the attack committed suicide.
The head of the Columbia Metropolitan Police Department, who heads the Washington, D.C. Police Department, announced the suicide of a police officer who was present during the Trump supporters’ attack on Congress.
According to the Hill website, Robert Conti announced the suicide of the second police officer present during the attack on Congress by supporters of the former US president and named him “Jeffrey Smith”.
According to the Columbia District Police Chief, Smith was injured during the attack on Congress while trying to counter the attack.
“This is a very sad and catastrophic event for us,” Conti added. “He was injured in a confrontation in Congress, and a few days later the officer died.”
U.S. police have announced that they are investigating the suicide of a police officer.
According to Hill, at least two U.S.police officers were killed in a Jan. 6 (Trump) attack on Congress, one by suicide and the other by injuries sustained in clashes between attackers and congressional police.
At least five people were killed in a Trump-instigated attack on the US Congress, including a congressional police officer.
Trump’s stance in urging his supporters to go to the US Congress on the day of the approval of the electoral votes of the US presidential election caused the Democrats to impeach him in the Congress.
The Democratic-majority US House of Representatives has approved Trump’s impeachment in the last days of his presidency, and his impeachment hearing is scheduled for February 8 in the Senate.
