Schools in southern India closed due to protests against the hijab ban

Authorities in southern India ordered schools closed today, Tuesday, as protests against the ban on Islamic headscarves escalated, sparking outrage among Muslim students.

According to Pak Sahafat news agency, quoted by Reuters, The clashes in Karnataka have raised concerns in Muslim minorities, who say the crackdown has escalated under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ethnocentric government.

In today’s demonstrations, police used tear gas to disperse the population that had gathered on a state campus.

Meanwhile, the police have increased their presence in schools in nearby towns.

After announcing that all schools in Karnataka were closed for three days, Karnataka Interior Minister Basafraj Bumai called for calm.

Bumai said: I call on all students and administrators of schools and colleges to maintain peace and tranquility.
