Saudi Arabia’s first reaction to the developments in Tunisia

The Saudi Foreign Ministry reacted in a statement to the ouster of the Prime Minister and the suspension of the Tunisian parliament, calling on the international community to help Tunisia meet its economic, health and medical challenges.

According to the Saudi state news agency WAS, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Riyadh supports everything that contributes to the stability and security of Tunisia.

Emphasizing that Riyadh is following the current developments in Tunisia, the Saudi government stated: We are confident that Tunisia will be able to overcome this current situation.

The statement said that Saudi Arabia respects Tunisia’s internal affairs and considers it a matter of sovereignty.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry also called on the international community to work together to address Tunisia’s economic, health and medical challenges.

Over the past decade, the Islamic Awakening, which began in Tunisia and led to the escape of Saudi ally Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, has been a major challenge for Riyadh. By helping Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and carrying out a coup in Egypt, Saudi Arabia managed to silence the voice of the Egyptian people, which is why experts and observers in the region accuse it of playing a behind-the-scenes role in the country’s developments.

Tunisia is facing its worst crisis in 10 years after the overthrow of the government and the dissolution of parliament with the help of the army.

Following the protests, Tunisian President Qais Saeed, in an emergency meeting with military and security commanders, decided to oust Prime Minister Hisham al-Mashishi and take over the executive branch, suspend parliament and revoke the immunity of its members, and sought to restore calm to Tunisia announced with the help of the new prime minister.

As of Sunday morning, all roads leading to the main streets of the Tunisian capital were blocked and a large number of security forces were deployed on the main streets of Tunisia.

Tunisian parliament speaker and leader of the Ennahda movement, Rashid al-Ghannouchi, has described Qais Saeed’s actions as a coup against the country’s legal elements and strongly opposes them.
