Saudi analyst: Riyadh joining Shanghai is a step to develop cooperation with the East

Pak Sahafat – A Saudi political analyst said on Friday night that the country’s joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is an important step to expand diplomatic partnership to the East, considering what the West is witnessing and the consequences of Russia’s military operations on other countries.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency, “Saad Abdullah Al-Hamid” said in an interview with “Sputnik” channel: Saudi Arabia’s joining this organization, which has been joined by a number of countries with high economic growth and success, has many benefits for Riyadh.

He continued: This issue is in addition to Saudi Arabia’s 2030 vision and benefiting from the partnership with the countries in this organization, which makes the vision and development plans and sustainable goals of Saudi Arabia come true with membership in this organization.

Al-Hamid pointed out China’s success in strengthening its relations with Saudi Arabia after the successful mediation between Tehran and Riyadh, and said that this action reflected positively on regional issues and had a great impact on Saudi relations with Beijing.

He added: Saudi Arabia joining the Shanghai Organization despite the membership of countries such as Iran, Turkey, China and Russia can improve security, stability and peace.

On the 9th of April, the Saudi Council of Ministers approved the country’s accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as a “dialogue partner”; An action that can be the first step for Riyadh to take the path of membership in this international organization with great economic and commercial capacities.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an international and Eurasian organization that was founded in the form of a political, economic and military alliance in the city of Shanghai, China on June 15, 2001 by 6 countries: China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. These countries, with the exception of Uzbekistan, were members of the “Shanghai Group of Five” which was established in this city on April 26, 1996.

After that, India and Pakistan also joined this organization as full members on June 9, 2017 at the Astana meeting.

Regarding the Islamic Republic of Iran, during the summit of this organization that was held in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan on September 17, 2021, the members agreed to change Iran’s status in the organization from an observer member to a full member.
