Russia supports a Middle East without nuclear weapons

Pak Sahafat – The Russian ambassador supported the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East.

According to Pak Sahafat news agency, citing Tas, “Mikhail Ulyanov”, the permanent representative of Russia in international organizations based in Vienna at the third session of the United Nations Conference on the establishment of a Middle East free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction (ME WMDFZ) said: Russia has always supported the creation of a Middle East free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.

Ulyanov noted that Russia is participating in the conference as an observer. We firmly declare that only the countries of this region can solve the problem of creating a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, and they will undoubtedly come to terms with this idea.

Yesterday, the third meeting of the Middle East Conference free of weapons of mass destruction began in New York with the speeches of the Lebanese representative in the United Nations as the president of the conference and the president of the United Nations General Assembly. Amir Saeed Irwani, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations in New York, explained the views and opinions of the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding the main topic of the conference.

Referring to our country’s membership in the international regimes of weapons of mass destruction, he emphasized Iran’s continuous policy on the complete and final destruction of weapons of mass destruction, including the official proposal to establish a zone free of nuclear weapons in the Middle East in 1974.

The ambassador of Iran expressed his hope that other member countries of the conference will also adopt such a steadfast policy and refrain from following any other policy that would negatively affect the establishment of such a region. Irvani stated: In line with such a steadfast policy, all member states should equally enter into the treaty on a zone free of weapons of mass destruction, and for this purpose, before finalizing this treaty, it is necessary to ensure the membership and implementation of other treaties by all the countries of the region.

He also expressed his country’s deep dissatisfaction with the two consecutive failures of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty revision conference in 2015 and 2022, as well as the failure of the fourth revision conference of the Chemical Weapons Convention in 2018, said: These failures show that the process of establishing a zone free of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, which could have been supported by these conferences, has not been strengthened.
