Protests in France over police violence

Thousands of French citizens marched in major cities, including the capital, along with the families of victims of police violence and racism, to protest the impunity of law enforcement officials and racism.

Thousands marched on Saturday along with families and relatives of victims of police violence across France in protest of police brutality and racism.

According to the Anatolian News Agency, protesters gathered in large cities and areas such as Paris, Toulouse, Lyon, Lille, Rennes and held banners reading “Stop Immunity” and the slogan “There is no justice, there is no peace” on the occasion of World Police Violence and Racism Week.

They also called for the immediate suspension of forces involved in violence and killings, or for making racist remarks.

The French protesters also demanded the repeal of the controversial World Security Bill, which gives police and security forces greater oversight powers, and the repeal of a bill to strengthen respect for republican principles targeting the French Muslim population.

According to the report, the French Senate on Thursday unanimously approved the bill with a new text of Article 24. The article had previously been criticized for restricting public circulation of images of police violence.

The bill provides a new framework for the use of drones for police surveillance purposes, as well as allowing officers who are not on duty to carry weapons in public.

The security bill has been widely criticized at home and abroad since its passage in the French National Assembly last November for restricting public freedom and violating privacy laws.
