Petro pointed out that the “conflicts experienced in the old continent will lead to the economic destruction of Europe” and said: Following the war in Ukraine, the European economy collapses, Germany enters recession. The President of Colombia said about the increase in the price of the dollar, which reached 4,800 Colombian pesos on Wednesday this week and broke a new record: Conflicts and waves of global recession mean that the price of the currency is increasing and will remain in this trend. This is something that is not only happening in Colombia, but also in several Latin American countries.
In this way, Petro invited Latin American countries to design a common plan to respond to the economic crisis.
Colombia’s new president’s criticism of US policies comes at a time when Colombia, previously ruled by the right-wing and staunch allies of Washington, is at the center of US policy in the Latin American region. In a statement on May 22, US President Joe Biden’s office officially announced Colombia as Washington’s main non-NATO ally. Therefore, the regulation of relations with the new government is of great importance for Washington.
