Popular demonstrations in Bahrain for the release of Sheikh Salman

In the sixth year of the arrest of Sheikh Ali Salman, the leader of the Bahraini opposition, large demonstrations took place in different parts of the country. Demonstrators demanded his release.

Six years have passed since the arrest of Sheikh Ali Salman, Secretary General of the Al-Wefaq Society of Bahrain, by the Al Khalifa regime. He has been sentenced to life in prison for his peaceful struggle for reform.

The ruling regime convicted him on baseless charges, such as spying for Qatar and inciting the government, and disbanded Jamiat al-Wefaq, the country’s largest political opposition group. This party had 18 members in parliament.

Shakh Salman called for reforms in Bahrain, but never sought to overthrow the ruling regime throughout the February 14 revolution. However, the government imprisoned him along with a number of revolutionary leaders who demanded the overthrow of the ruling regime.

Observers see the regime as a testament to the fact that it does not distinguish between reformist and subversive forces and considers both groups to be enemies of the ruling family. The Crown Prince of Bahrain has never tried to address the issue of the arrest and torture of Sheikh Salman and other activists, and this is a testament to the fact that this family is facing the nation and suppressing it.
