Politico: French democracy is sick / 70% distrust of the ruling system

An international media outlet described the country’s democracy as “sick”, citing low turnout in France’s regional elections.

In a detailed report, the news-analytical site “Politico” described the country’s democracy as sick, referring to the low turnout of the French people in the first round of regional elections in France.

Neither French President Emmanuel Macron nor his rival, Marine Le Pen, were able to achieve their expected results in the first round of the French regional elections, and more importantly, in an unprecedented event, nearly two-thirds of the people did not go to the polls.

Macron’s centrist party (Anne Marsh) is said to have won 10 percent of the vote; A vote that is only enough to participate in the second round of voting, which will be held next Sunday.

“France is in a crisis of democracy,” Politico wrote. “This problem manifested itself quite clearly on Sunday, when nearly two-thirds of the voters went to the polls.”

Turnout was 16 percent lower than in the previous round of regional elections, a rare occurrence in France.

Politico also wrote that the decrease in participation was not due to the spread of the corona virus. Only 17 percent of those polled by the IFOP polled said the epidemic had contributed to their decision not to run. In addition, elections in Italy, Germany and the Netherlands over the past 12 months have all had near-normal turnout rates.

The outcome of this election is being closely monitored in France, and experts consider it a measure of the French presidential election, which is scheduled to take place in less than a year.
