Ineffective Security Council meeting on Sudan / Blinken’s telephone conversation with Hamdouk after release

The UN Security Council failed to issue a joint statement on the events in Sudan following disagreements among its members.

The UN Security Council did not issue a joint statement following Tuesday’s emergency meeting on the situation in Sudan. Sources said that China and Russia refuse to describe the events in Sudan as a “coup”.

Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s deputy envoy to the United Nations, had previously stressed that the Sudanese people must decide for themselves whether or not their country is a coup d’état and called on all parties to stop the violence.

“It is difficult to say whether this was a coup or not,” the Russian diplomat said in a press release before the Security Council meeting. Coup has a special meaning. Such incidents are repeated in different parts of the world and are not referred to as coups.

Sudanese Army Commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan announced on Monday the state of emergency in Sudan and the dissolution of the Governing Council and the Council of Ministers.

Doctors and Sudanese government workers went on a general strike on Tuesday in protest of a “coup” that has plunged the country of 44 million people into new unrest.

On the other hand, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had a telephone conversation with ousted Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdouk and welcomed his release.

A statement from the State Department said: Blinken welcomed the release of the Sudanese Prime Minister and called on the Sudanese military to release all detained civilian leaders and ensure their safety.

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdouk has returned to his home in the capital, Khartoum, less than two days after his arrest by the military and the announcement of the dissolution of his government by the army commander-in-chief, Sudanese media reported.

According to the local newspaper Al-Sudani, Hamdouk was released amid heavy military deployment around his home and returned home.
