Forced labor sentence for Myanmar’s former leader

Pak Sahafat – A court in Myanmar has sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi, the former top official of the country, who was previously sentenced to 17 years in prison, to an additional three years in prison for fraud in the elections.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report, quoted by CNN, A court in Myanmar sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi to three years in prison with forced labor for rigging the November 2020 election.

CNN added: With the addition of these three years to Suu Kyi’s sentence, he, who is now 77 years old, must spend 20 years in prison.

This American news media wrote: This is the first time that Suu Kyi has been sentenced to forced labor since the 2021 military coup that led to the removal of Suu Kyi from power.

Suu Kyi was sentenced to forced labor in another court in 2009, but the court reduced his sentence.

The “National Union for Democracy” party led by Suu Kyi was able to defeat the rival party by a large margin in the 2020 elections, but three months after the election, the rival party, which belonged to the military, prevented her from forming a government and eventually replaced San Suu Kyi.

Suu Kyi is currently serving his sentence in Nay Pyi Taw, the capital of Myanmar.

Last month, a court in Myanmar sentenced Suu Kyi to 6 years in prison for four counts of corruption, including embezzlement, which brought his sentence to 17 years.

Since the beginning of the coup, Myanmar has been in turmoil with the spread of conflicts and the suppression of peaceful street protests in the cities of this Southeast Asian country.

The army of this country stated that the reason for the coup was fraud in the elections in November 2020. However, the monitoring groups announced that they did not find evidence of widespread fraud in the elections.
