For the first time, North Korea has appointed a woman as foreign minister

Pak Sahafat – North Korea has for the first time appointed a veteran politician, Chui Sun Hui, as its foreign minister.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency report on Saturday from France 24 news agency, Chui Sun Hui, a former North Korean deputy foreign minister, was appointed foreign minister to lead the ministry at a meeting of the ruling party, led by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

He is set to replace Ray Soo-gun, a former extremist military official who led talks with South Korea.

Chui Sun Hui, a fluent English-speaking diplomat, has previously worked as a close aide to Kim Jong Un during the US-North Korea nuclear talks.

On the eve of the US-South Korea summit in Hanoi, which led to the failure of negotiations without reaching an agreement between the two countries in February 2019, he held a rare Q&A session with reporters and urged the United States to defeat the talks.

She said: “I believe the United States has lost a golden opportunity by rejecting our proposals.”

Diplomacy between Pyongyang and Washington has since stalled, and Kim Jong Un’s government has significantly increased its missile and weapons tests in recent months, responding to repeated US attempts to return to the negotiating table.

The United States and South Korea have also warned of Pyongyang’s readiness to conduct a nuclear test. US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman recently announced that the United States would respond strongly to North Korea’s actions.
