Erdogan once again demanded to change the Turkish constitution

Pak Sahafat – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan once again demanded to change the constitution of his country and asked his opposition representatives in the National Assembly of this country to talk to him about it.

According to Pak Sahafat News Agency’s report on Tuesday, quoting from the Star news website, During a speech at the 2023 Constitution Symposium instead of 1982, ErdoÄŸan announced that he has not given up on his goal of drafting a “new, civil, democratic, libertarian and inclusive constitution” for Turkey.

Addressing the representatives and parties present in the Turkish Parliament, he said: I invite all political parties, civil society and university members to express their opinion and discuss and negotiate for the drafting of the new constitution so that the most ideal text of the Turkish constitution is drawn up.

The President of Turkey emphasized: We will meet with all the groups in the parliament and knock on their doors to draft a new constitution.

He considered the constitution drafted after the 1982 coup of Turkey to be “the biggest dagger of the coup government to the heart of Turkey” and continued: We have never given up on our goal of drafting a new constitution worthy of the Turkish nation, and this is one of the elements of the goal of Turkey’s century.

ErdoÄŸan called the ruling spirit of the current Turkish constitution, which was drafted in 1982 after the military coup and is being implemented with reforms in the following years, as contrary to the goals of the growth and development of his country and said: In the 100th anniversary of its republic, Turkey must have a constitution that fits its capacity.

He compared the current constitution with all its subsequent changes to a “patched patch” and added: “This constitution has become a burden that is difficult for both politics and the country to bear.”

Before the elections of his country four months ago, which led to the victory of him and his supporting parties, the president of Turkey had promised that after the elections, drafting and preparation of a new constitution for Turkey would be on the agenda.

Erdogan considered the occurrence of frequent coups and the rapid change of governments in Turkey over the past years as a result of the lack of a strong constitution and stated that everything the Turkish government has done in the last two decades has been an attempt to compensate for the lack of democracy and development for centuries.

About three months ago, Turkish parliament speaker Numan Kurtulmus called for the change of the country’s constitution and announced that the Turkish constitution should be revised according to the goals of the next 100 years.

The last constitution of Turkey, which was drafted by the Constituent Assembly and approved by the National Security Council after the coup d’état of the Turkish army on September 12, 1982, and subsequently approved by the people of this country during a referendum, is currently being implemented.

In 2017, the ruling Justice and Development Party along with the National Movement Party of Turkey changed the country’s government system from a parliamentary system to a presidential system based on the amendment of 18 articles of the constitution that was approved in the referendum of the same year.
