China is ready to recognize the Taliban if Kabul falls

China is ready to recognize the Taliban as the legitimate ruler of Afghanistan in the event of the fall of Kabul; A prospect that undermines the Biden government’s efforts to counter the militants.

According to Reuters, Beijing has publicly and openly stressed to the Taliban that it is continuing to work for a peace agreement with the government of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. It has informed China that it is preparing to normalize relations with the militant group.

The news comes as the Taliban have taken control of much of Afghanistan and 10 provincial capitals, one of which is near Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.

It also undermines US efforts to pressure the militant group to return to Doha diplomatic talks in good faith.

White House spokesman Jen Saki said today (Friday) that while the Taliban wants international legitimacy, its actions do not support such a claim. It is better for them to focus their energy on the peace process than on military campaigns. We strongly urge them to participate in peace talks.

At the same time, any stability in Afghanistan could allow China to reap the benefits of economic investment in the region, including the right to mine in Afghanistan. China is seeking stability in Afghanistan with regional infrastructure projects similar to those pursued in Pakistan, and is part of a similar global investment called the Belt and Road Initiative.
