Biden: Failure to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives is a disgrace for America

Pak Sahafat – American President Joe Biden criticized the failure of the House of Representatives Republicans in electing the Speaker of the House and starting the work of this House, calling it a disgrace to his country and embarrassing, and said that this inefficiency has a negative impact.

Biden told reporters on Wednesday local time that the developments in the House of Representatives are a disgrace because these developments cause a long delay in the commencement of the work of this House.

The American president added: This is a disgrace and a shame and it will take a long time. The way they (Republican lawmakers) treat each other is embarrassing.

Biden continued, the failure of the House of Representatives to elect a Speaker on the first day of the 118th Congress is not a good thing for America.

The 180th Congress of the United States began its work on Tuesday, January 3 local time, when Kevin McCarthy, the leader of the Republicans in the House of Representatives, failed in three rounds of elections for the presidency of this House.

The Republican leader did not get the required majority of votes in the three rounds of elections for the presidency of the US House of Representatives, and this meeting was postponed to Wednesday.

The Republicans were able to win 222 seats in the mid-term elections in November 2022 and get the majority of the House of Representatives.

Democrats won 212 seats in this election. 218 votes are required to elect the Speaker of the Parliament. This is while in the first round of the elections, which was held today, Tuesday, 7 Republican representatives voted for other candidates, including Andy Biggs.

This is the first time in a century that the US House of Representatives has failed to elect a lawmaker as Speaker in the first round.

Kevin McCarthy, the Republican leader of the US House of Representatives, has talked with many legislators and even agreed to offer extraordinary concessions in order to take over the leadership of the US House of Representatives.

A handful of Republican lawmakers have publicly opposed McCarthy, but senior members of his team have said they are optimistic about the outcome of McCarthy’s efforts.

According to Axios, on Sunday, McCarthy introduced a package of legislative changes for the new term of Congress, which is an attempt to win the opinion of Republicans and gain their support for his presidency.

McCarthy has been talking to Republican lawmakers for weeks to drum up support. This is while he had a poor performance in the mid-term elections and was able to win by a short distance.

Earlier, it was announced that McCarthy defeated conservative representative Andy Biggs by 188 votes to 31 in the unofficial election for the Republican House leader.

He is supported by former US President Donald Trump and a number of main members of the Freedom faction, including “Jim Jordan” and “Taylor Green”. But other conservative members of this parliament have voiced their opposition to him. Some warn that the number of his opponents is even higher than this number.
