The National Democratic Union Party, led by Sochi, won parliamentary elections in February last year with 83 percent of the vote. The Myanmar military has denied the allegations, saying they were rigged and should be re-run. This led to internal strife and eventually a military coup in the country. The head of the Myanmar government was placed under house arrest in February 2021 after military rule in the country, and the armed forces accused him and his party of fraud and corruption.

Aung San Suu Kyi, winner of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, was Myanmar’s head of civilian rule until a military coup in February 2021. The military occupation of the country led to a wave of civil protests in which more than 1,180 people were killed in clashes with the military.
