Palestine moves to internationalize the case of Israeli settlements

The Palestinian Foreign Minister announced the request for a meeting of the UN General Assembly or an extraordinary meeting of the Security Council on settlements.

According to Pak Sahafat news agency, quoting Palestine Today, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki told reporters in Ramallah that the Palestinian leadership intends to either request a general assembly or an extraordinary Security Council meeting on the settlements.

He added: This decision requires influential countries to have a clear vision and a deep understanding of the dangers of Israeli settlement in the West Bank and East Jerusalem and its reflection on Palestine on the borders of June 4, 1967.

Al-Maliki said two special envoys of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will travel to some countries to persuade them to take action against the settlement. Contacts and consultations are also underway with the US government to put pressure on the Zionist regime to suspend settlement projects.

The Zionist regime recently announced its intention to implement a number of new settlement projects in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, a move that was condemned by the Palestinians, who saw it as undermining peace opportunities and canceling the 1967 two-state solution.

Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, also called on the Security Council to take responsibility for the Zionist regime’s violations on Palestinian soil.

He said the council’s resolutions on the “two-state” solution, the Arab peace plan to establish an independent Palestinian state in the East Jerusalem capital, should be implemented.

Mansour called on the council to take practical action to ban settlements, encroachments on the holy sites and the siege of Gaza.

The settlement case is one of the main conflicts between the Zionist regime and Palestine and one of the main reasons for the suspension of peace talks between the two sides in 2014.
