Iraqi official: ISIL is waging an economic war

The head of the Iraqi National Defense and Security Commission said that ISIL terrorists were the cause of the explosion of electricity towers in the country.

“Mohammad Reza,” the head of the Iraqi parliament’s defense and national security commission, said in a speech that ISIL terrorists are blowing up electricity pylons at the behest of their new leader to put Iraq in economic trouble.

He told Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed website that ISIL terrorists intend to target the security of the economic market, and that parliament will soon invite security officials to ask them about the explosion of electricity pylons and the security situation in Iraq. The parliamentary official described the explosion of electricity pylons as an “economic war” by ISIL terrorists.

At the same time, forces of the 25th Al-Hashdal Shaabi Brigade in the southern province of Ninawa this morning (Sunday) prevented ISIL terrorists from blowing up electricity pylons in the area.

Al-Hashd al-Shabi said in a statement that ISIL terrorists intended to detonate bombs under power poles, but al-Hashd al-Shabi forces found three bombs and prevented them from doing so.

Al-Hashd al-Shabi also announced that it has intensified measures and patrols to prevent the explosion of electricity pylons.

In recent weeks, ISIL terrorists have also destroyed power transmission lines in various Iraqi provinces, amid rising temperatures and an urgent need for electricity. Abdul Khaliq al-Azzawi, a member of the parliament’s defense and security commission, said yesterday that since the beginning of this year, 15 terrorist operations have been carried out in Diyala province alone to blow up the towers. In the past month, power towers in northern Iraq have been targeted 34 times.

Yesterday, the power transmission line in the east of Mosul was targeted, which caused a blackout in the Al-Darnaj area. The Al-Qayara to Kirkuk power grid was also the target of five explosions on Friday evening, causing a complete power outage in the area.
