Details of the assassination of Hisham al-Hashimi, an Iraqi political researcher

Iraqi media today published details of the assassination of Iraqi security and strategic expert Hisham al-Hashimi.

Ahmad al-Kanani (b. 1985), the killer of Hisham al-Hashimi, has admitted to belonging to a law-breaking group.

He stated that he joined the police in 2007 and worked as a police officer with the rank of first lieutenant in the Ministry of Interior.

Al-Kanani said of the details of the operation:  “We set off on two motorcycles and a Corolla to carry out the assassination operation”. We waited on a corner of the street next to Al-Hashimi’s house until he came in a Prado car. I shot at the car. As soon as the car stopped I went to him and killed him with a personal weapon.

Al-Hashimi was shot dead by two motorcyclists in front of his home in Baghdad’s Ziona district on the evening of July 28, 2020, while returning from an interview with an Iraqi network. This incident shook the Iraqi nation.

Al-Hashimi was one of the experts and analysts on strategic and security issues, whose views were considered in the Iraqi media and political circles.

Al-Hashimi was shot dead by two motorcyclists in front of his home in Baghdad’s Ziona district on the evening of July 28, 1999, while returning from an interview with an Iraqi network.

Hisham al-Hashimi’s brother had previously stated that his brother had been repeatedly threatened with assassination by ISIS.
