The speaker of the Syrian parliament, Hamouda Sabbagh, told a news conference announcing the election results that 14 million 239 thousand Syrians participated in the presidential election.
He further said that “Bashar Hafez al-Assad” was able to get 13 million 540 thousand 360 votes, which was equivalent to 95.1 percent of the votes.
The Speaker of the Syrian Parliament added: “I declare the victory of Bashar Hafez al-Assad in the Syrian presidential election.”
Hamoudeh Sabbagh added: “Mahmoud Marie won 470,276 votes, which is equivalent to 3.3 percent of the vote, and Abdullah Salom Abdullah received 213,968 votes, which was equivalent to 1.5 percent of the votes cast.”
