Ain al-Assad base siren sounded in western Iraq

The siren went off at Ain al-Assad air base, a US military base in western Iraq’s Anbar province, on Sunday morning.

The siren was activated at the same time as a missile was fired near the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center “BDSC”.

An Iraqi security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Shafaq News: The maximum alert status at the Ain al-Assad base included the activation of sirens and the alert to prepare for [counter] missile action.

He added: The missile did not cause any damage or casualties.

Wayne Maruto, spokesman for the US-led International Coalition against ISIS, tweeted: Any attack on the government, the leaders of Iraq and the coalition undermines the sovereignty of Iraqi institutions, law and national sovereignty.

Meanwhile, Victoria Military Base at Baghdad International Airport has opened a defense system that will cover the entire base.

An Iraqi security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Shafaq News: The maximum alert status at the Ain al-Assad base included the activation of sirens and the alert to prepare for [counter] missile action.

This base has also been repeatedly targeted by missiles in the past.

The military section of Baghdad International Airport, along with Iraqi forces, is home to foreign international forces, including the US military.
