Germany ends its 20-year military presence in Afghanistan

The Ministry of Defense of Germany  on Tuesday night withdrew all its troops from Kabul after 20 years in order to withdraw foreign troops, including US troops, from Afghanistan.

“After 20 years, the last soldiers of our armed forces are leaving Afghanistan tonight (Tuesday night),” the German Defense Ministry wrote in a Twitter message.

The German Ministry of Defense continued to address its forces: You are on your way home now. This is the end of a historic chapter and an intense effort that has challenged us.

“Last night, the last German troops are leaving Afghanistan safely,” German Defense Minister Anne-Great Kramp Karnbauer wrote in a Twitter message.

“After 20 years, our intensive mission abroad is over,” Carnbauer said. Many thanks to the 150,000 men and women who have served there since 2001.

The withdrawal of German troops from Afghanistan comes as the New York Times reported on Tuesday that US officials expect the full withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan to be completed in less than a week until US National Independence Day on July.

Following the US agreement with the Taliban in Qatar in March 1998, the United States was scheduled to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan on May 1, but President Joe Biden broke his promise to withdraw the troops by the 11th.
