UN: 22,000 Yemenis displaced by war in Ma’rib

The United Nations says more than 22,000 Yemenis have been displaced as a result of fighting in the central Yemeni province of Ma’rib.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s spokesman Stephen Dugaric told a news conference in New York that more than 22,000 Yemenis had been displaced since last February as a result of violence in the central Yemeni province of Ma’rib.

Clashes continue in Yemen, including in Ma’rib, and have displaced more than 22,000 people since early February, Dogarik said.

According to the Rai Al-Youm newspaper, Dugarik added that the Yemeni economy is collapsing and its national currency has depreciated unprecedentedly this month, meaning that the people of the country will no longer be able to pay for food and basic goods.

He added that more than half of Yemen’s population is facing food insecurity and that five million people are one step away from starvation.

The Saudi aggressor coalition bombed 16 Yemeni provinces of Ma’rib and Saada on Friday.

In recent days, the United States and the Saudi aggressor coalition have made every effort to prevent the Ansarullah movement from advancing in Ma’rib province.

The Arab Coalition against Yemen, led by Saudi Arabia, has launched a military aggression against Yemen and a land, air and sea siege of the country since April 26, 2015. More than 233,000 people have been killed so far.
