Putin-Biden meeting; Duel or negotiation?

Experts have expressed differing views on the Putin-Biden meeting, which is scheduled to take place this evening in Geneva, Switzerland. As a result, some people consider it ineffective.

US-Russian relations have been going through a difficult period in recent years, IRNA reported from Moscow on Wednesday. It was in March 2014 that the relations between the two sides soured under the pretext of the internal crisis in Ukraine under Barack Obama.

Donald Trump, who won the presidential election on November 8, 2016, had repeatedly expressed a desire to return to dialogue, but in practice, Washington continued to oppose it, using economic, military, and political means. , Used propaganda and other tools against Russia, restricted hundreds of Russian citizens and legal entities, and imposed dozens of sanctions packages on Moscow. Washington’s last move against Moscow was last month, when the United States expelled 10 Russian diplomats and imposed a new package of sanctions on the country, and of course, in response to Russia, expelled 20 American diplomats.

From the last telephone conversation between Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden  and the proposal for a face-to-face meeting, evaluations, discussions and active discussions about the goals of the importance and results of this meeting were formed.

White House spokeswoman Jane Psaki said the United States did not intend to change its position on putting more pressure on Moscow over plans to hold a new Russia-US summit.

For its part, the Kremlin has said that holding a meeting is not a solution. According to Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Moscow will only raise issues between the international communities.

Relations between Moscow and Washington have deteriorated so much that the meeting will not warm up, and even the Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly said that the two countries’ interaction is in the worst possible condition, especially due to the pressure of US sanctions and ongoing accusations against Moscow.

Some media outlets do not believe in mutual benefit between the two sides and disagree on who benefits most from this dialogue.

Alexei Pushkov, chairman of the Federation Council’s Information and Media Interaction Commission, said talks between Biden and Putin were unlikely to warm relations between the two countries.

He recently stated in an interview with Russian media: “There are still many signs of the development of new anti-Russian sanctions. Biden did not apologize for his ugly remarks, and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that the United States and NATO had a lot of military activity on Russia’s borders. So talking about a warming of Moscow-Washington relations is a misjudgment of the situation.”

Pushkov said the US leader had always said that, unlike his predecessor, Donald Trump, he would not show favor to the Russian president and would clearly tell him what the US wanted.

Svetlana Jurova, first deputy chairwoman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, said there was a need for dialogue between the two leaders, especially because of Biden’s harsh remarks about Putin.

Fyodor Lukyanov, a professor and researcher at the Higher School of Economics, examines the upcoming meeting between the presidents of Russia and the United States in a memo titled “Confrontation Repair” published in the Rasiskaya newspaper. The beginning of this note begins as follows: High-level meetings between Russia and the United States have always caused a great deal of controversy. Even when both sides insist on not exaggerating expectations and not counting on what is not possible anyway, something like this happens.

Strange as it may seem, international affairs analyst Igor Subutin writes in the Gazzetta newspaper that Russia and the United States need a well-organized confrontation, recognizing the real contradictions and their hierarchy, and at least a basic picture of the frameworks and lines allowed.

Russia’s presidential aide Yuri Oshakov told the Tass news agency that at least an understanding would be reached if Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden did not reach an agreement (during today’s meeting in Geneva).

Sergei Markov, head of the Russian Institute for Political Studies, also believes that the issue of Iran’s nuclear program is on the agenda of the Russian and US presidents in Geneva, and that Vladimir Putin will insist on lifting illegal and unilateral US sanctions against Iran.

According to the RIA Novosti news agency, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said during a meeting with US President Joe Biden last week that the two sides agreed to contain Russia and hold talks with it at the same time.

At the same time, according to Fox News, the Russian president will claim that his meeting with Biden will undermine Western trust and solidarity, because the US leader will be passive towards him.

Details of Putin-Biden meeting

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced the details of the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden in Geneva, saying the meeting would last about five hours.

“This is the first meeting between Putin and Biden as leaders of Russia and the United States,” said Yuri Oshakov, the Russian president’s aide for international affairs.

Oshakov noted that Putin will first meet with the Swiss president, and after a brief speech by the host, the presidents of Russia and the United States will travel to the Villa Library for talks.
