Saudi human rights activist sues UAE

Lajin al-Hazloul, a Saudi human rights activist who was recently released from prison, said she had filed a lawsuit against the UAE for espionage, kidnapping and illegal seizure of her car.

Al-Hazloul’s complaint against the UAE was related to her arrest in 2018 and her forced extradition to Saudi authorities.

Al-Hazloul a Saudi human rights activist announced that she would continue to fight after her release, that she would pursue the verdicts against her, and that she would appeal to the Supreme Court against her exit ban.

Al-Hazloul spent 1001 days in Saudi prisons and was released on February 10, 2021.

During his unlawful detention, she was subjected to numerous illegal attacks on her inalienable rights. Now, after her release, she is fighting for her rights, especially because of the aggression that the UAE has committed against her.

According to evidence provided by Al-Hazloul, Abu Dhabi police illegally sold her car because she did not answer her calls in prison.

Al-Hazloul’s family had previously filed a complaint against Saudi Arabia and the UAE with the United Nations in June 2020, alleging human rights abuses against Lejin, including her abduction in the UAE and torture in a secret Saudi prison.

Lajin al-Hazloul is a journalist who has lived in the United States. She is known for her defense of Saudi women’s rights and has been arrested several times for her stance.

Al-Hazloul has been campaigning for equality between men and women in Saudi Arabia since 2013. She has worked tirelessly to end the ban on women driving and has attacked the patriarchal system and domestic violence.

Al-Hazloul was arrested in December 2014 for crossing the UAE into Saudi Arabia by car, and was arrested again in 2017 without charge.

In March 2018, she was deported from the UAE where she lived and returned to Saudi Arabia, where she was detained for several more days.

Earlier, an expert team at the United Nations claimed that the UAE had violated her rights by forcibly deporting her. “The UAE government cannot escape its responsibility to persecute al-Hazlul for pursuing legal rights and freedoms,” the team said.
